Profiles in Ice: Prince Albert II

April 22, 2015

Prince Albert II of Monaco is a well-known figure when it comes to environmental issues.

His Serene Highness has done a lot to create awareness about Climate Change and its impact on Antarctica. The Prince became the first head of state to tour the Antarctic region in January 2009 when he visited many scientific research stations and planted the flag of Monaco at the South Pole. During the expedition, His Serene Highness met with Antarctic scientists to discuss environmental problems and raise awareness of the drastic measures needed to increase conservation efforts in Antarctica.

Prince Albert is the only head of state to have led expeditions to both North and South Poles.  A passionate advocate for the environment, the prince also gave a speech at the 5th Global Conference on Oceans, Coasts and Islands.

In 2006, His Serene Highness founded the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.  This foundation has initiated many projects concerning global environmental issues, including raising awareness for the melting West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the threat of rising sea levels.

The Prince of Monaco is a passionate, determined, and resourceful Climate Change warrior who hasn’t hesitated to enter into the field and work with scientists on the ground.
